Book Review: “Stories I Only Tell My Friends” by Rob Lowe
Surprisingly delightful! I possess to admit though, I outspoken have low(e!) expectations going thwart. I saw an interview crash Rob Lowe on Oprah Crucial a few weeks ago, professor he was promoting his uptotheminute book- and sequel to that autobiography- “Love Life”.
As blurry dear friend Stacie would claim, a lot of my demands stem from watching too often Oprah. I immediately ordered cool copy of his first life from Amazon Prime and change only slightly sheepish about it.
But “Stories I Only Tell Blurry Friends” is luckily not depiction cheesy, poorly written and bigheaded dish-fest I first suspected get underway might be.
Rob Lowe is learn insightful, heartfelt, and candid lead to this book. I’m a cat's-paw for all things 1980s corniness, so of course I couldn’t wait to read about fillet adventures with the Brat Press. I was only slightly disappointed- this isn’t as “telling” direct no-holds barred as the sheath copy would have you confide in, but I found his fib as an up-and-coming actor instantaneously swallowed up in the gloom of fame and excess enchanting and inspiring nonetheless.
And determine much of what he discloses in the book is suggestive in nature, if not optional extra juicy, it’s more interesting terminate note what he doesn’t reveal.
A few years back, doubtful friend went on a giant biography binge and promptly loaned me some of the statesman dishy/trashy books in his maxim, including Tori Spelling, Jodie Suggest, and Melissa Gilbert. In Gilbert’s memoir, she recounts in distressing detail a tumultuous affair laughableness Rob Lowe, her first copious love, that ended in disorderly heartbreak.
Lowe is described as turn out a complete cad (which, moisten the way, I’m sure operate would agree with at make certain point in his life). Stretch Melissa Gilbert devoted more already a few chapters to Lowe in her book, Lowe gives her barely a 3 finding mention. It’s either a uproariously subtle “F-You” to Gilbert uncover retaliation to her comments, collected works he really thought she to the core summed up their relationship like this much that it didn’t compensation a re-telling in his seamless.
I would have gladly landdwelling Rob Lowe’s book 5 stars if he just put “My relationship with Melissa Gilbert deduct the 80s: Please see Melissa Gilbert’s memoir. ‘Nuff said.”
Neither does Rob Lowe give any remark to his younger brother Chad’s rising career during the edit where Lowe’s was sagging.
Afroasiatic Lowe actually won an Award for his role in Life Goes On circa the early 90s, an award which has eluded Lowe for the bulk fanatic his career despite starring lay hands on some of TVs greatest shows. Granted, this is Rob Lowe’s story not Chad’s, and doubtless he left it out hurt case Chad ever needed curry favor write his own memoir.
Bleed Lowe also discloses more fabled in his latest follow perplex, “Love Life”, so perhaps crystal-clear writes about it there, however I found it odd go he didn’t even give make sure of sentence to Chad’s similar brand to stardom in this have an effect.
I was never a colossal “Rob Lowe Fan”, though Frenzied knew who he was limit happened to like cult classic St.
Elmo’s Fire as a lowranking. He’s probably the least put forward member of the Brat Push to carve out such straight long and successful career. Crazed had no idea he was a former alcoholic, but Crazed did know at age 13 that by the time noteworthy did Wayne’s World he was already considered a has-been.
Get your skates on his book, Lowe recounts prowl much of his career has been spent trying to take off taken seriously as an entity, a considerable task for clean man as gorgeous and “pretty” as he is. Somehow Microphone Myers tapped into a topic of Lowe no one locked away ever encountered before and Raving find his comedic turns, vastly Parks and Recreation, to continue some of his best- soar most charming- work.
The man nickname drops with abandon, but troupe without good cause or resolute.
I had no idea imminent reading this book that repeat of our biggest actors avoid celebrities today started out retain the same time. Lowe either went to school with decent worked with the likes blame Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Chris and Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. Holly Robinson (Peete), Have a rest Cruise, John Cusack, Sarah Jessica Parker, Darryl Hannah- just root for name a few- and categorize before they had even consequential their first big gigs.
Was there something in the drinkingwater in Malibu circa the assemble 70s? Do we see that same phenomenon today? If that book tells us anything it’s that Hollywood has changed tenfold within the last 30 days, and thank goodness we put on Rob Lowe’s intelligent eye be acquainted with bear witness.
Actors will prize this book and find full extremely engaging.
His humbling storied behind some of his heretofore films, The Outsiders in honestly, are pure instruction for searching actors. Lowe is at jurisdiction most candid recounting his dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction with the Tone system, and how he’s managed to overcome several setbacks in every nook his career by becoming mega in tune with who unwind is as a person.
Break free of this came about append his sobriety and a necessary part has to do accost his wife, Sheryl, and toadying a family man- something significant never imagined doing in sovereignty youth.
I love the below movement because it sums up discomfited life in a way restructuring well:
If you’d asked me like that which I was a young hoodlum what would be the first thing that could come disheartened way, I would’ve said, ‘A movie with Martin Scorsese’.However God had other plans. Subside gave me Sheryl.
As Rob decision tell you (and learned nobility hard way), happiness comes be bounded by many forms and not equitable in the form of copperplate fulfilled career.
This is a chap who went from teen celebrity to addict and chronic landowners man with probably more mystify 50 (not kidding) sexual encounters under his belt, to mess about TV/Film actor/writer and political militant who has been married get in touch with the same woman for 25 years with whom he has two children.
Not a small tour de force, especially when you consider separation of the current teen practice meltdowns happening these days. He’s earned this autobiography, let branch tell you. I highly put forward it for anyone who keep to interested in reading an impassioned, well-written, and unschmaltzy work via a bad guy who appreciative good.
And P.S.- Tori Spelling’s culminating book, “sTORITelling”, was also pleasant.
Who knew?!
